2006 Summary and Photos Bob Weiner, Chapter President
As we begin 2007 it is probably
appropriate that we look back on the previous year for the Ferrari Club of
America – Houston Chapter. 2006 was a very successful year for the Club.
Building on the foundation from past years the Club grew both in
membership and in activities. Before we congratulate ourselves on the
success of 2006 it is fitting that we thank those individuals without whom
2006 would not have been a success. I would like to thank all those
individuals that put on events, hosted breakfasts or coordinated
activities. I would also like to thank all the individuals who
volunteered their time to help make each and every event a success. And
finally I would like to thank the Club members that took time out from
their busy lives to come and join the Ferrari Club at events during the
year.
2006
was a year full of Club activities. Listed below are some event
highlights.
The year started off in January with
on open house at the MSR racing facility. Club members got exposed to the
facility, were given a “quick” tour of the track and later had a chance to
participate in a series of parade laps.
In February we celebrated Enzo’s
birthday with a memorable police escorted drive followed by a reception at
Valobra’s Jewelers. Less than ideal weather didn’t keep a large number of
club members from enjoying a special event with that special touch that
only Franco Valobra can provide.
March kicked off with Bobby Perry’s
annual Cajun breakfast featuring unique Louisiana food and Cajun
martinis.
April 1st witnessed the
start of the F-1 season with an Australian GP watch party at Ronny and
Celia Ravkind’s. While the race disappointed Ferrari fans the party did
not. April concluded with another event at Franco Valobra’s jewelry
store. This time Club members got to see the new Risi Competizione
Ferrari 430 GT2 race car, as well as enjoy the hospitality of Valobra’s
Jewelers. Once more the weather didn’t cooperate on Saturday, but was
fine on Sunday for the spirited police escorted drive.
In April the Houston Chapter hosted
the fourth annual South Central Regional Meet. Cavallino al Lago started
off Friday evening with the traditional cocktail reception and silent
auction benefiting Make-A-Wish Foundation which raised over $7,000.00 for
the charity. Saturday featured a photo rally followed after lunch by the
infamous toy car rally. Grady Owens and his staff set a high bar with
this year’s effort. Saturday ended with a luxury party boat dinner cruise
on Clear Lake. Sunday’s Concorso found a fabulous field of Ferrari’s
arrayed against a backdrop of beautiful yachts. Thanks to organizers
Patsy Richard and Jenny Lambert and all their volunteers for putting on a
great weekend.
May was a busy month with a number
of very special events. The annual two day Keels & Wheels Concours
featured our annual Saturday dinner at Villa Capri Restaurant. May saw
the revival of the Houston GP which this year featured both Champ Car and
ALMS races. Your Ferrari Club hosted a Car Corral that was the envy of
the factory sponsored ones from Corvette and Porsche. The three day event
featured good food and drink, meetings with drivers and other dignitaries
and was highlighted by club members getting to do a series of parade laps
before the ALMS race.
June saw the Classy Chassis Concours,
held indoors at Reliant Stadium. Several Club Members entered their
Ferrari’s while many more attended the event as spectators.
During July the Club watched the
U.S. GP pool side at the home of Mel and Susan Jacobs. Later in July was
the annual Hot Summer Nights fun rally. This year Hot Summer Nights – VI
“A Mystery Rally” proved to be another wild and wacky fun rally put on by
Grady Owens and Michael Zeitlin.
In August, Ferrari of Houston hosted
their annual brunch and open house. Members got an interesting and
informative tour of the dealership and race shop where there is always
something special to see and this year was no exception.
In September the Club celebrated the
end of summer with a party of the home of John and Sue Mundy. Good
friends, Margaritas and Mexican food all helped us say goodbye to summer.
Later in the month there was a special reception and brunch hosted by Jeff
Moore and his staff at DriverSource. Club members got to tour their new
facilities as well as see and talk about some very special cars.
In October, working with Franco
Valobra, the Club helped organize the first annual Festival Ferrari
located in the Highland Village Shopping Center. Nearly 40 Ferrari’s,
ranging from an early 60’s 250 SWB to the latest 430, wowed the crowds
with their beauty, grace and style. October also saw several Club members
displaying their Ferrari’s at the annual Italian Festival at Bear Creek
Park.
November introduced the very
successful “Bribe the Judge Concours” a charity event benefiting Ronald
McDonald House of Houston. The generosity of Club members was truly
phenomenal with over $12,400.00 raised for a very worthy charity.
The year concluded with our annual
Holiday Party generously hosted once again by the John and Sue Mundy.
Replacing our normal “white elephant” gift exchange this year Club Members
brought toys for teenagers. Additionally, Michael Zeitlin conducted an
auction benefiting Ronald McDonald House. Club members once again showed
their generosity by raising over $7,000.00 for RMH.
