MONTEREY – PEBBLE BEACH 2009                <open the accompanying slide-show>

Each year several members of the Houston Chapter of the Ferrari Club of America travel to the Monterey peninsula in August for the week long series of car related activities.  While most of us that journey out to Monterey do so only as spectators, several Houston Chapter members actively participate with their cars in one or more of the week’s events.  This year I ran into three Club members who participated with their cars during the week’s activities.

David Duthu raced his 1925 Bugatti Type 35-A grand prix car in Group 2A (1925 – 1949 Racing & Sports Cars) during Saturday’s Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races.  Pictures 1 – 4 show David and his Bugatti.  Pictures 5 – 8 show David driving his number 88 Bugatti down the famous Corkscrew turn at Laguna Seca.  At the awards presentation David was awarded the Rolex Monterey Historics Award for Outstanding Performance in the Pre-War Groups.  Congratulations to David.

Jim and Evelyn Fasnacht entered two cars in several different events.  Evelyn entered her 1949 Crosley Hot Shot in Tuesday’s Carmel Concours On The Avenue.  Picture 17 shows Evelyn in the Crosley at Carmel Concours On The Avenue.  Evelyn also entered the Crosley in Saturday’s Concours LeMons winning an award for most dangerous car; pictures 26 – 28 show Evelyn and her crash test dummy “Bloody Mary”.  On a more serious note Jim and Evelyn entered their 1930 Ruxton Model C Rauch & Lang Phaeton in Sunday’s Pebble Beach Concours in Class C-1 (American Classic Open 1930 – 1932) winning a class award.  Pictures 18 – 25 show Jim and Evelyn and their Ruxton at the Pebble Beach Concours, while picture 29 shows the Fasnacht’s in the Ruxton driving at Big Sur during Tuesday’s Tour d’Elegance.

Gray Gregory raced his 1970 Chevron B16 sports car in the Group 7A (1964 – 1971 FIA Manufactures Championship Cars) during the Saturday’s Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races.  Pictures 9 – 12 show Gray in his Chevron entering turn 4 during the morning practice session. Pictures 13 – 16 show Gray in the race as he negotiates Laguna Seca’s famous Corkscrew.

I have been going to the Monterey / Pebble Beach August car week for many years.  If you have never been you should try to make the trip.  If you have been then you know how incredible the week can be.  If you would like to find out more about Monterey / Pebble Beach or get information on specific events please send me an e-mail so we can get together.
